This is a component part of the China-UK Social Innovation Project focusing on support to develop a social enterprise sector in China and build on long-term relationship between China and UK in this area.  In this component, we work with different partners looking at both policy aspect and practice aspect of social enterprise.  Our partners include China Centre for Comparative Politics and Economics, Capital Institute of Social & Economic Development, Shining Stone Community Action and Global Links Initiative.

The main activities in this component include a study visit to the UK, a follow-up dissemination seminar, developing and launching a social enterprise publication, and developing pilot social enterprises in Beijing.

Social Enterprise Study Visit
27 August-5 September 2007

A 16-member Chinese delegation consisting of government officials, academics, NGO representatives, social entrepreneurs and TV crew paid a successful study visit to the UK from 27 August to 5 September.

The aim of the visit was to look at the best practice of the successful UK social enterprises to explore how they operate to meet the unmet social needs and tackle some of society's most entrenched social and environmental challenges, and meanwhile, to look at how UK government both at central level and local level support the development of social enterprise.

Develop the Social Economy and Build a Harmonious Society Seminar
31 October 2007

The British Council Beijing office jointly organised a high-profile seminar with CCCPE (China Centre for Comparative Politics and Economics) and the Capital Institute of Social & Economic development in Beijing on 31 October 2007.

The theme of the seminar is "Develop the Social Economy and Build a Harmonious Society ". It was an important activity to share the outputs of a series of ongoing Social Innovation Project activities delivered by British Council China which stemmed from the successful 2006 International Conference on Social Innovation. The knowledge and information gained through the Social Enterprise Study Visit to the UK in August were disseminated. The BC/CCCPE joint publication titled Social Enterprise Overview: A UK and China Perspective and the re-developed Discover Social Innovation website were both launched.

Social Enterprise Publication
April-October 2007

British Council Beijing office published 4,000 copies of the social enterprise publication jointly with China Centre for Comparative Politics & Economics.  The publication was a special addition to the Bijiao (Comparative Economic & Social Systems) Journal, which is a well-recognised key academic journal in the area of economics and social science.

Commissioned by the British Council, DEMOS and China Centre for Comparative Politics & Economics have written two chapters for this publication. The DEMOS chapter gives a comprehensive review of social enterprise in the UK. The CCCPE chapter reviews how the concept of social enterprise is introduced to Mainland China and gave some examples of social enterprises in China.

Developing Pilot Social Enterprise
October 2007-2008

Social enterprise is a new concept with considerable potential in China. There are a few emerging social enterprises in Beijing which are keen to explore how they run and grow their business and maintain their social perspective.

British Council will facilitate the partnerships building between UK's social enterprises and China's social enterprises as a follow-up to the social enterprise study visit. This will help the emerging social entrepreneurs in China to acquire knowledge and skills to develop their business through sharing learning with their UK partners.
