The British Council has been devoting to promoting social innovation in China in recent years with the strong belief that social innovation is crucial in meeting social demands and tackling social problems. Thanks to our wide range of partners from China and the UK, remarkable achievements have been made. The highlights include the first International Conference on Social Innovation in October 2006, the social enterprise study visit to the UK in the summer of 2007, the publication Social Enterprise Overview: A UK and China Perspective, two documentaries co-produced with Beijing TV and many others.
Through our work, we have come to realize how significant the third sector's role is in stimulating social innovation and driving social change. This has brought about the idea of holding a conference to demonstrate the great contribution that the third sector makes to addressing social challenges and strengthening social cohesion, and provide a platform for the UK and China to share experience on the issues of common concern.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of P.R.C., the British Council hosted the Social Innovation and Third Sector Conference from 4th to 5th December 2008 in Beijing, bringing together nearly 150 government officials, the third sector representatives, and academics from the UK and China to have in-depth discussion and exchange on a series of important topics.
The event will include:
- One-day conference on 4th December
- A networking dinner in the evening of 4th December
- A half-day field visit to local NGOs and social enterprises in Beijing on 5th December
