The Catalyst Awards were set up to search for inspiring stories of people who are using social technology in new and exciting ways. The winners were announced on 24th July 2008, all of whom are exemplary illustrations of how technology is changing lives.

To marks the tenth anniversary of the Compact, the agreement which sets out shared commitments and guidelines for working between government and the voluntary and community sector, a national conference is being held on 9 September 2008 in Birmingham to debate the future of the Compact and discuss key questions.

From 7 to 9 August, Ford Motor China delivered a capacity building training in Chongqing for more than 30 NGO representatives in the area of environmental protection from southwest China, the ninth of its kind since Ford Motor Conservation & Environmental Grants launched the training in 2006.

An Aberdeen social enterprise that offers work experience, training and employment opportunities to young people has bought 50 per cent of a private sector driver training company, the first merger of this kind in the north east of Scotland.

In 1994, Margaret Elliott set up SHCA which has grown into a massive success (Social Enterprise Of The Year at the 2006 Enterprising Solutions Awards), finding work for almost 200 disadvantaged local residents while supplying care to over 500 elderly and disabled people.

Scotcash was set up as a social enterprise, a response to growing concerns about the levels of poverty among Glasgow Housing Association's tenants and the evidence that suggested they were becoming poorer still because of the high rates of interest being paid out to doorstep credit companies.
